At some point or another we will have to start using tools to work on our Aptera. I thought it would be interesting to have or make a list of the necessary tools for regular maintenance, cleaning systems, purging systems, lubrication, calibration, assembly, etc. So far, all I can gather is we all are going to need an OBDM2, likely a laptop computer to install the accompanying software, and an electrical tester. No mention so far of as much as #10 wrench. Those in the know should start letting us know what the tools of the trade will be for us "do it yourselfers" who will ultimately become a pain in the donkey, but will also guide and inspire others to work on their own vehicles. Will we even have to fix flats for the Aptera? Will it have an accompanying jack? Do I start looking for a large Torx set?
What do you think?
In over 5.5 years with a BEV as my only vehicle, the only tools I've found important are a Crescent wrench (or even just pliers!) to disconnect the 12V battery to clear computer glitches*, & a little portable jumpstarter because 12V failure often happens before its warning activates**. The OEM tire seal/inflate kit came in handy on my friend's 500e.
* A wing nut would suffice, in place of the OEM nut.
** Periodic viewing of my add-on voltage gauge would give sufficient warning to avoid the need of a jumpstarter:
Note that it's the lightest (& coincidentally cheapest) options I chose to emphasize with bold underline.
This is a topic that is better answered directly by Aptera in the FAQ spreadsheet before we all start firing our guns in the air....
I would prefer a smartphone app to diagnose via OBD plus a web based manual. But since the car has a screen ... why need an external device at all.
Yes. I remember hearing that quote & it was definitely Nathan, on a Zoom (or the like) discussion with some sort of non-Aptera EV fan club.
In one of Nathan's videos he mentioned with a couple wrenches an a few Allen keys you can dissassemble an Aptera! Maybe it was an exaggeration , but I hope it will be minimal (in tune with being simple and lightweight!
I heard they may have some basic repair instructional videos you can pull up one the Aptera's 15" screen🤞
