What does “downvoting” mean? I measured the extended mirror width on my F 250 and posted it. Then got a notice that “someone” downvoted that post…. Who voted that post ”down”? Do they not like a factual measurement? Did I violate some posting guideline? How can I find out?

These are the reasons a lot of opinion style forums do away with the downvote link. It tends to get abused more often then used correctly.
All depends on who is reading your post - a person who think they have more knowledge or experience on a subject may down vote your answer. People with less knowledge and experience may up vote your answer if it makes sense to them.
There will always be people with less or more knowledge than you! You will get a notification on who up voted or down voted your answer. Learn to live with it. It is not a precurser to start an argument. Read more investigate more and get yourself educated on the subject and next time give an even better and educated answer that will even impress the "experts" :)
Thanks
IMHO Sometimes some readers just accidentky hit the 🔼🔽 button
Sometimes that person realizes later and may vome back and upvote
Sometimes they don’t agree but leave no reason
But NO Forum Moderators do no hit those buttons “for guideline violations”
I hope this helps
You didn't violate any rules. There will always be people who drop by and downvote everything when there is a public forum. Don't worry about such things. They are best delt with by ignoring.
