Photovoltaic cells loose efficiency when they deviant from a rectangular shape. Of course square is the best. seems to me that orienting them in a diamond diaper pattern makes a more aesthetically pleasing blend with the body curves than would a horizontal-vertical checkerboard pattern.

I assume the solar array that has been fashioned to minic the array on the vehicle, on their building for over a year and provided the 180 cell / 700 watt data was in the same orientation but.... I do not know
