I never owned a super fast car 1) because I never needed it and 2) I would just get in trouble😞
Now my AWD Aptera will come along boasting this acceleration. What does a retiree do with that?!
” Get out of trouble fast. “

Get your grandparents one... This will help:
Fastest I've driven was 115 mph in a 1963 Lincoln Continental. I slowed down when it seemed the front wheels were losing traction when a gust of wind hit the car. Yup, I got scared. lol 😂
Fastest I ever have been was 165 mph in a built BMW 335D (415 whp). Scary fast. As long as it can cruise at 85 mph I'm happy. I think I can use the 'slower' 2 motor version just fine. Instead of fast 0-60 times, I actually want good 30-70 times for freeway merging.
OMG! I had a 1972 Datsun 240Z AND later a Toyota MR2! (2000).
Both were as described above, & with a cheap airdam added, the 240 wasn't even scary at 130mph.
However my current Fiat 500e only goes 88, & I haven't found it lacking for daily use. In fact its typical EV instant off-the-line torque makes it even more fun around town than either of the above.
I drove at a sustained speed of 107 - 122 mph in a Toyota MR2 along a turnpike in New York at 3 AM for over an hour. My logic was that there was nobody on the turnpike, so I could not hurt anyone and there wouldn't be any cops since there were no cars. That car was rock solid. I casually drove with 2 fingers pinching the steering wheel with my hand resting on my leg.
Can still remember this first time I hit 100 MPH....the family station wagon, my father at the wheel. I was, like, 10. A 1973-73 Chevy Caprice Classic Station wagon w/ a big block 350. Took a while to get there, but it smooth all the way.
Yeah, agreed, nothing over 90 MPH necessary but wait....aren't there STILL some areas in the American SW where there ARE no speed limits, only signs stating "DRIVE SAFE"?
I don't have much use for speed above 90 mph, but good acceleration is nice to have, especially when you don't have to be worried about wasting fuel or polluting. But making yourself uncomfortable with too much acceleration is silly. I think it is limited to 110 mph, which is fine with me.
I have rode in a Model 3 and the owner stepped on it. The acceleration was a little uncomfortable for me. I look forward to snappy, precise driving, but I don't to make myself dizzy. Please don't put speed or acceleration limitations on an Aptera.
Eat Corvettes
I pre-ordered the "Gear-Head" Aptera model. The drag racer special in a sense, AWD, 250 mile 25Kwh battery for the lightest overall weight and of course, the 0-60mph in 3.5. I drive a 2014 Camaro 2SS/RS with 400hp and a 0-60 of about 4.8'ish. I only need in town range for the commute from home-work-home. I work a 9 hour day, so the "full solar" option I ordered should give me more "fuel" than I got to work with when it comes time to go home. I definitely can't say that for the thirsty Camaro. In summary, the Aptera to me is the best of both worlds - in a sense - "Performace Electric". We still want muscle cars for the future, they wont have small block Chevy engines, it will be high KW output hub motors, and that is what Aptera is for me. I'm order# 20342, so I will have a bit of a wait, but it will oh soo be worth it.
Drive it and use it when needed. My current daily has a 0-60 of 4.8. It makes me grin, but it’s not like I use it all the time.
What will I do with 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds?
SMILE !
Does traction control sense slippage of the tires and adjust the torque to be just below that point? If so, that means there would be more torque and faster acceleration with sticky tires, than with hard rubber, less gripping tires.
Or, does traction control simply keep the torque always at the same low limit, regardless of tires.
Yes, if you turn off the traction control it will squeal the tires.
It would be nice at least once to just silently leave behind a motor roaring, tire squealing mussel car. Other than that the increased confidence in the snow.
It can!
I lived in NJ for decades and the car merging into flowing traffice had to yield and the signs stated the same...
Here in AZ “that is the rule” BUT many merging ramps have no Yield to merging traffic signs
Flowing traffic typically move over to a faster lane to let merging traffic cars on
That was a eye opener for me!
It is different in “these parts”!
But speed “for avoidance“ ( aka used responsibly ) can be good!
Slow moving cars can't merge safely on the freeway. Quickness saves lives.
Acceleration power is just a tool, use it with freeway on ramps, and lane changes of varying speeds, you will not slow the traffic as you enter from a slow lane to a faster one.
Hopefully never abuse it.
Do you really need 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds?
Of course you do!!!
Don't ask silly question.
Getting on the freeway, is a good time for accelerate
Ya, don't get me wrong: If I could afford a dual-motor Aptera, I'd LOVE the ludicrous 5.5-second 0-60! & in my richest dreams I'd love a 3-motor's insane 3.5 sec!
So bring on the no-cost 3-motor upgrade! (by deleting the friction brakes).
Have fun! I want AWD for one reason = 3.5 sec 0-60.
The dual-motor FWD is also about twice as fast as my own current ride, which is what prompted me to want a cheaper, lighter, simpler, even-more-efficient single-motor RWD Aptera.
That is until they go to regen-only braking where it's cheaper, lighter & simpler to have front motors for braking, instead of discs, calipers, hydraulic cylinder, reservoir, lines & pump.
✅For most it will be more than enough!
3.5seconds is a consequence of the optional AWD
A “good consequence” for some.
Nearly fifty years with no speeding ticket here....I would like to retire from driving with that fact
Nothing at all since I reserved a FWD. 5.5 seconds to 60 is still about twice as quick of a sprint as my current ride. I am sure that incremental improvement will be quite thrilling enough for me.
Five days of tasks... You still have two more 😉
Not sure there are emojis for all
A: Smile - just smile .....
B: Giggle whenever driving
C: Prolly scare myself the first time I floor it - (Note: To self, buy 'Depends' before 1st fright)
D: Try to keep up with my Wife's new MINI GP! 😱. She's the lead-foot in the family
E: Drag for beers? 😇
To impress Rihanna? Someone should photoshop an Aptera into her music video.. Shut up and Drive https://youtu.be/up7pvPqNkuU
aptera needs these sporting features to market to people who would otherwise buy another 2 door car, like new toyota 86, mx 5 miata, camaro and mustang new nissan 300z and 400z, even grand touring bikes etc.
although aptera may have less grip b/c thin tires, aptera can recommend other tires for sporting and the big radius front tires help with more tire patch contact to road for grip etc. also even the he.avist aptera is supposed to be 100 lbs less than mx5 miata, most will probably buy less range lighter versions, the weight can make up for sporting design sacrifices made for being a efficiency as first priority car
Absolutely nothing. I see a time in the not too distant future where EVs will be regulated to be throttled back for safety. Just imagine everyone driving around in these supercars thinking public roads are race tracks. Very unsafe.
