Agency Information Collection Activities; Notice and Request for Comment; Drivers' Use of Camera-Based Rear Visibility Systems Versus Traditional MirrorsThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is re-issuing an announcement of our intention to request the Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) approval of a proposed collection of certain information by the Agency. Before a Federal agency can collect certain information from the...

There is no question that we should replace mirrors with cameras! When I learned to drive, most cars only had a drivers side mirror! We were trained to use our rear view mirror and glance over our shoulders to check the blind spot, when changing lanes.
Passenger side mirrors carry the caution that objects are closer then they appear, because they are designed to show the blind spot. Cameras properly placed and designed provide a far greater field of view and should replace all mirrors. They are reliable and as safety equipment must be maintained. They certainly are better than a glance over the shoulder or a distorted passenger side mirror image.
Finally, cameras combined with sensors can provide warnings for lane changes as backup camera displays provide.
Please don't think that this NHTSA request is to determine whether or not to permit the use of cameras in lieu of mirrors on vehicles. It actually concerns how NHTSA will conduct research and test people using cameras instead of mirrors to determine the differences in the perception of their surroundings.
NHTSA must first understand how cameras may actually be used and what conditions and design parameters should be established in the regulations to permit cameras as an alternative to mirrors.
Any regulation changes will be considered only after this proposed testing is completed and analyzed.
Even though we'll intended, comments that don't address the request won't be useful.
Remember the old advice on how to take a request? First RTFQ. It applies here as well.
In the USA it is legal for individuals to replace the mirrors with cameras but illegal for the manufacturer to ship the car without mirrors.
The Audi e-tron and the Honda e (and probably the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 will) already have cameras instead of mirrors here in Europe, I expect future Aptera will have them to without problems.
