Are they planning on submitting it to IIHS and asking them to test it as if it was a car? The Aptera is classified as a motorcycle from a legal point of view but they claim it will be as safe as a car. Being safer than a motorcycle is no comfort, I want to see an IIHS+ top safety rating which means that it not only can stand impacts but also won't roll over.

There have been other manufacturers that have requested testing that aren't required to have them done by law. Also there are about 1/2 a million new vehicles on the road in the US each year that have been tested, but that the manufacturers refuse to publish the results, which they aren't required to do. People don't realize that. My guess is that the first vehicle from 2005 was physically crash tested and that coupled with virtual test results that the have performed with the new design, gives them a high confidence level that it will do well, Even some vehicles that fall under the automotive crash test requirements today are accepted as safe with only virtual crash test results submitted to the IIHS. I drive a Gen 1 Honda Insight which weighs about the same 1800 lbs as a 400 mile range Aptera. It got 4s when it was crash tested in 2001. I was rearended in my first Insight by a large car at 60 mph and was uninjured. I am quite sure the Aptera will be even safer that that has proven to be.
