Searched but didn't find a suggestion for a removable trunk lid. This would allow large objects in "Hauling" mode. Bicycle(s), electric lawnmower are some items I'd use it for. Add Weathertech rubber matt, D rings for ratchet straps that secure a load & something like a durable rubber 'pool noodle' to protect car body edge.
Other reasons for removable trunk lid? Tailgating, camping, emergency response. Remove gear from car & use it as bed. Attach tent to opening. If lid has PV, aim at best angle for sunshine & run cable to car for best charging.
I'd be OK if speed had to be limited to prevent highway use, ie 45MPH. I don't see why but for liability. The car would know when lid is removed. Just an idea.
Maybe this idea can be evolved into a micro pickup truck version, where the trunk is the bed and the lid can be removed when hauling.
I see the following difficulties making the hatch removable.
* Those pneumatic air springs are dangerous under compression and thus hard to remove, requiring some tool to restrain them. (I learned about that on my Chevy Volt hatchback.)
* I'm guessing the rear hatch also provides structural integrity in case of a collision, just as the doors do. This thing isn't designed to be a beach buggy!
* It also provides the largest area of solar panel, if you have that option, which would need to be electrically compensated for in the charging circuits.
...& a plain mirror if needed to be legal, since door removal deletes the cameras.
On that note, maybe later a factory or after-market "summer" kit, with doors replaced by just a crash-beam with airbags.
So this is a great idea, if for no other reason than an open air option. When your cruising down urban streets on a hot summer night what would be better than having the back wide open! Efficiency is secondary at that point.😜
This was asked.....Aptera said that they are not making it removable “at this time”.
One could likely DIY. The hatch almost certainly IS removable, with difficulty (not impossible), & a yacht canvas shop could make you the tent.
